4 checks before excavating or replacing a French drain in Laval
- 1. The permit and the contractor. When the work involves a sewer or water connection, the City issues an excavation permit to the contractor, who must provide a Régie du bâtiment du Québec license and an insurance certificate naming the City of Laval as co-beneficiary. Marco holds RBQ license No. 5775-3246-01.
- 2. Backwater valves. They are required on all drain connections lower than the street crown, upstream of the main collector, but never on the building’s main collector itself. Valves and cleanouts must remain easy to reach and be maintained at least once a year.
- 3. The stormwater retention pit. It must be monolithic and watertight, connected to the main storm collector, with a backwater valve on the connection between the pit and the collector.
- 4. The pump. A sump pump must be permanently installed in the pit that receives all of the building’s stormwater, and its discharge line, fitted with a check valve, must rise at least one metre above the street crown before connecting to the main storm collector.

Questions about excavation and drainage in Laval
Do I need a permit to excavate around a foundation in Laval?
When the work involves a sewer or water connection, the City issues an excavation permit to the contractor, who must present a Régie du bâtiment du Québec license and an insurance certificate naming the City as co-beneficiary. For your specific project, confirm with the City (311) which permits apply.
Where must a backwater valve be located in a Laval home?
On all drain connections lower than the street crown, upstream of the main collector. Installing one on the building’s main collector is prohibited. Valves and cleanouts must remain easy to reach and be maintained at least once a year.
Does my stormwater retention pit need a pump in Laval?
Yes. The City’s leaflet requires a sump pump permanently installed in the pit that receives all of the building’s stormwater. The pit must be monolithic and watertight, with a backwater valve on the connection to the collector, and the discharge line must rise at least one metre above the street crown.
My Laval home’s French drain is over 40 years old: does it have to be replaced?
Not automatically. CAA-Québec gives about 40 years as normal lifespan and describes three levels of work: hydro-jet unclogging, repair of one section or full replacement, after a camera diagnosis. Depending on the condition of the wall, the cause of a leak can also be a crack rather than the drain.
Exterior excavation or interior drain: which should I choose for a Laval home?
CAA-Québec considers the interior drain when excavating outside is difficult or impossible: the slab perimeter is cut, the trench is connected to a sump pit with a pump and the walls are protected by a drainage membrane. Read our comparison Interior or Exterior French Drain.
